Wood Pellet Manufacturing System in Spain

Wood Pellet Manufacturing System in Spain

A 1t/h wood pellet manufacturing system in Spain was commissioned in early 2024 for a client in the Catalonia region, about 80km west of Barcelona. The facility processes 2,702 tons of dry sawdust annually into 2,700 tons of ENplus A1 certified pellets for the Spanish and French heating markets.

The plant operates one 8-hour shift per day, 300 days per year (2,400 total operating hours), with just 4 employees. Total investment was $62,000 USD, of which $11,000 was allocated to environmental protection (baghouse filter, exhaust stack, and septic system).

What makes this 1t/h wood pellet manufacturing system in Spain particularly efficient is its simplicity. The client uses just one wood pellet mill, one baghouse, and basic material handling equipment. No dryer, no crusher, no complicated conveyors. The sawdust arrives pre-dried from local furniture factories at 10-12% moisture – ideal for direct pelleting. The entire operation fits in a 1,250m² rented factory building with four workers.

The client had been running a small logistics business for ten years. He noticed that furniture factories in Catalonia were producing large quantities of sawdust – dry, clean, and consistent. The factories were paying to have it hauled away.

He had a building (1,250m²) in an industrial park. He had grid electricity, municipal water, and sewer connection. He had saved about $70,000.

His question: “Can I set up a 1t/h wood pellet manufacturing system in Spain that uses only one pellet mill?”

We asked about his raw material. He sent samples. The sawdust was from kiln-dried pine and oak – moisture 10-12%, no paint, no glue, no chemicals. Perfect. No drying needed. No crushing needed.

We told him yes. A 1t/h wood pellet manufacturing system in Spain could work with a single mill. The simple design would keep capital costs low and operations straightforward.

The client set up collection agreements with five furniture factories within a 40km radius.

Raw MaterialAnnual Input (tons)As-Received MoistureCost (USD/ton)Source
Dry sawdust2,70210-12%$15Five furniture factories

The client pays $15/ton delivered. The sawdust is dry and clean – Spanish furniture factories use kiln-dried lumber.

Total input 2,702 tons, output 2,700 tons. The 2-ton difference accounts for dust collected (about 1.23 tons) and moisture loss (about 0.77 tons).

The client also generates about 0.1 tons of waste packaging annually, which is recycled.

Most wood pellet production lines need dryers for wet sawdust and crushers for large offcuts. This one has neither.

Why no dryer? The sawdust comes from kiln-dried lumber (10-12% moisture). This is already below the ideal pelleting range of 10-15%. No drying needed.

Why no crusher? The sawdust is already small (1-5mm particles). It feeds directly into the pellet mill.

This 1t/h wood pellet manufacturing system in Spain has no dryer and no crusher. The client saved $30,000-40,000 upfront and avoids ongoing energy costs.

The client bought the wheel loader locally in Spain.

Shipping: One 40-foot container. Departed Qingdao September 15, 2023. Arrived Port of Barcelona, Spain on October 28, 2023. Sea freight: $3,200 USD. Inland trucking to Catalonia (about 80km) added $600 USD.

The client’s building was a single-story factory on a 1,250m² site.

Here’s how the 1t/h wood pellet manufacturing system in Spain actually runs.

Step 1 – Material handling
The wheel loader moves sawdust from the raw material area to the pellet mill’s feed hopper. A collection hood above the feed point captures dust.

Step 2 – Pelleting
The single pellet mill produces 1.125 t/h. The client runs it at 90-95% capacity for sustained operation (1.0-1.05 t/h). Die size: 8mm for industrial and residential heating.

The pelleting process uses friction heat (80-100°C) to soften the lignin, which acts as a natural binder. No added binders or additives.

Step 3 – Bagging
Pellets drop directly from the mill outlet into the bagging machine. The client uses 15kg paper bags for retail and 1,000kg bulk bags for industrial customers.

Spain is a growing pellet market. The country has:

  • Over 200,000 pellet stoves and boilers installed
  • Government subsidies for biomass heating (Plan de Incentivos)
  • High energy prices making pellets competitive
  • Export opportunities to France (pellets sell for 5-10% higher across the border)

The client’s current customers:

  • A pellet distributor in Barcelona (120 tons/month)
  • Hardware stores in Catalonia (60 tons/month)
  • Direct sales to households (45 tons/month)

The client plans to add a second pellet mill in 2025 to reach 2 t/h.

We spoke with the client in July 2024, five months after startup. Here are his observations.

What worked well:

  • Single mill configuration. “One mill, one set of problems. Simple.”
  • No dryer. “Spanish furniture factories use dry lumber. I saved $30,000.”
  • Local raw material. “The sawmills are 40km away. Low transport cost.”

What he would change:

  • “The feed hopper dust collection could be better.” He’s adding a second hood ($800).
  • “I should have bought an automatic bagging scale.” Manual bagging is slow. He’s ordering one ($4,000).
  • “I need a spare die.” He has one die. If it cracks, the line stops. He’s ordering a spare ($1,200).

For this 1t/h wood pellet manufacturing plant in Spain, we delivered:

  • Process design – Single-mill minimalist layout.
  • Equipment package – Pellet mill, bagging machine, baghouse, stack, hood.
  • Installation supervision – Our engineer spent 8 days in Catalonia.
  • Operator training – Two days on die changes and Spanish compliance requirements.
  • Spare parts kit – Bearings, belts, and filter bags.

If you’re looking at a 1t/h wood pellet manufacturing system in Spain – or anywhere in Southern Europe – here’s what we’ve learned from this biomass pellet project:

  • Single mill at 1 t/h is a sweet spot. Simple, low capital, easy to operate. One employee can run the whole line.
  • No dryer needed if you source dry material. Spanish furniture factories use kiln-dried lumber. Pay $15/ton for dry sawdust instead of $5-10/ton for wet material. The math works.
  • Spain has a growing pellet market. With government subsidies and high energy prices, pellets are competitive.
  • ENplus certification is valuable. Spanish customers pay €440-480/ton ($480-520) for certified pellets vs €300-350 ($325-380) for uncertified.

The client in Catalonia is already profitable and planning to expand. If you have access to dry sawdust and a market for premium pellets, this model works.
