Pre – cleaning section

The first step in pelleting is conveying of ingredients from bulk silos or godown to the batching bins. It is essential to remove oversize foreign materials and iron trash etc. which otherwise can affect functioning of slide gates, gravity /screw feeder in batching or downstream.

Batching section

In modern complete feed mill plants, automatic weighing of different materials as per formulation to make one batch is called batching or proportioning. The weighing is done through an electronic controller working on PLC or microprocessor based, which can be operated through a computer.

Grinding section

After batching, next step is to reduce the material to the required degree of fineness to have maximum surface area for exposure to heat and moisture to accomplish gelatinization in conditioners. If we can perform fine grinding with minimum of energy, it will not only cut grinding cost but also save on energy required in pelleting.

Mixing section

Efficient mixing of micro ingredients in whole batch is significant in making quality feed. It should perform mixing to achieve minimum coefficient of variation in minimum time. Mixer discharging mechanism should aim at no leakage of gates with minimum residue in drum to avoid carryover to next batch.

Conditioning & pelleting

Conditioning is done to add heat and moisture in mixed feed to achieve gelatinization and making the product more pliable for pelleting. After conditioning the product is passed through a die in ring die pellet machine with the help of rollers and powdery material is converted into pellets.

cooling & Crumbling

The temperature of the prepared particles is brought to room temperature to ensure their quality. Crumbling is a process in which pellet after cooling is broken into small pieces to make it suitable for small chicks. If not required it can be bye-passed and product escapes from side of crumbling rolls.

Screening section

Product coming out of crumbler is either in pellets (if crumbler bye passed) or crumbs form. These are required to be screened to remove fines and overs. Single deck screeners are used to remove fines only while double deck screeners are used to remove both fine and overs.. The unbroken or the overs are returned to crumbler and fines return for repelleting.

Packaging section

After screening, the finished product is filled into bags. In small to medium plants, bagging can be carried out manually but for higher output it is better to go for electronic bagging machine. Electronic bagging machine can perform bagging with high accuracy and much faster rate

The investment cost of building a 60-80t/h complete feed mill plant is roughly between 1,450,000-1,800,000 USD. This range is relatively wide because the specific investment amount will be affected by many factors, including equipment configuration, degree of automation, raw material type, production process, site requirements and market conditions.

  • Equipment cost: For the production of feed, mixers, crushers, pelletizers, extruders, coolers, screeners, dryers, packaging scales, silos, cleaning equipment, environmental protection equipment, etc. are usually required. However, the specific equipment configuration and price still need to be determined according to the type of feed, production needs and budget.
  • Site construction cost: Includes land leasing or purchase costs, plant construction costs, ground hardening, drainage facilities, etc. According to the equipment layout and feed plant process, the site layout should be reasonably planned to reduce the site construction cost.
  • Electrical installation cost: Includes the installation, commissioning and maintenance costs of the feed mill electrical equipment.
  • Transportation logistics cost: Includes the costs of raw material procurement, equipment transportation and product transportation.
  • Labor training cost: Includes the training costs for production personnel to ensure that they master production skills and safe operating procedures.

How to carry out land planning and site selection for complete feed mill plants?

  1. Save land. Whether it is a new factory or the transformation of an old enterprise, land resources are a major investment. Since there are relatively many logistics vehicles in complete feed mill plants, it is best to choose a location with two or more sides facing the road, so that vehicles can enter and exit through one door, and there is no need to prepare a location for vehicles to turn around in the site. Even for traffic safety management within the factory, it can also save land area relatively.
  2. While trying to adopt new processes, new technologies, and new equipment, consider the addition of automated control systems, which will enable the company to obtain more resources for production, management, and later Internet marketing.
  3. Environmental protection issues must be fully considered, and the dust, odor, noise, earthquake resistance, logistics, lightning protection, fire protection, etc. in the workshop must comply with relevant regulations and specifications. Therefore, when selecting a site, consider staying away from the living area of the personnel.
  4. Process design and equipment selection should cooperate with each other. Process design is an overall design closely related to civil engineering, power, water supply and drainage and other designs. Different types of complete feed mill plants have different process designs. The selection of equipment is coordinated with process design. The principles of process design and equipment selection are: reduce the waste of personnel moving back and forth, reduce the waste of materials moving back and forth, reduce the waste of waiting, and reduce the waste of unqualified products. Make solid preparations for the lean management of production in the later stage.
  5. Complete feed mill plant construction projects are usually proposed based on the long-term development plan of the industry or enterprise. The so-called long-term plan refers to a plan for the business activities of the enterprise for more than 5 years. Before doing the preparation work for the feed mill, the team should fully discuss but not be limited to: the site selection of the new premix plant, product line composition, production process, raw material description, equipment description and other contents.
  6. In addition to considering the geological environment, human environment, material resources, climate and other factors, the site selection of the factory should also consider the surrounding commercial competition situation and the convenience of transportation.
  7. The policy orientation should also be one of the factors considered by the preparation team, especially for complete compound feed enterprises. With the inward movement of breeding areas, the foresight of site selection needs to be considered in advance. After fully considering the above information, participants should form corresponding documents for team discussion and reach a consensus.
  8. After site selection, the volume ratio of each industrial park, whether a single-story factory building can be built, building density, green space rate, building height, motor vehicle parking space configuration, non-motor vehicle parking space configuration, etc. should be considered uniformly. At the same time, it should comply with the current relevant technical regulations and specifications such as the local urban planning management technical regulations, and all buildings (structures) shall not exceed the building red line. Civil defense, earthquake resistance, fire protection, etc. shall be implemented in accordance with the current relevant national regulations.
  9. Full consideration and discussion in advance will have a certain guiding role in the later plane layout design and process design, and will allow enterprises to avoid many detours.

How to plan the raw material receiving and storage system for complete feed mill plant?

This problem is very complicated and requires specialized engineers to design it according to your actual situation. Below, RICHI lists 4 actual complete feed mill plant cases we have done for you, hoping to provide you with some help:

Case 1 Planning Features:

The land area of feed mill is 60.1 acres, with a designed annual output of 180,000 tons. It mainly produces livestock and poultry feed, and also produces aquatic feed. The silo is used to receive and store corn for immediate use, and the silo raw materials automatically enter the workshop. The bulk silo is mainly used for seasonal raw material procurement and long-term storage.

The bulk silo is designed with a discharge port, and the granular raw materials are automatically discharged by the “sweeping auger”. The bag room warehouse is used for small-scale raw material storage. There is a corn drying equipment behind the factory, which can be used for wet corn drying. The dried corn is directly stored in the bulk silo.

Case 2 Planning Features:

The land area is 69.9 acres, with a designed annual output of 400,000 tons of livestock and poultry and aquatic feed. The silo is equipped with a car flip unloading platform, which is used for bulk granular raw materials from the dock to receive and store them for a short period of time, and the raw materials automatically enter the workshop.

There are 16 bulk warehouses, which are mainly used for receiving and storing powdered raw materials. The storage period is relatively long. Forklifts are used to feed materials into the workshop. The room-type bag warehouse has a large area and can be used for seasonal raw material acquisition and storage.

Planning features of case 3:

The land area of complete feed mill plant is 29.3 acres, with a designed annual output of 100,000 tons, mainly for livestock and poultry feed production. The raw materials are mainly stored in silos, with large silos for corn and small silos for soybean meal. The room-type bag warehouse has a small area. The factory has few raw material varieties, and the raw materials are bought and used immediately, with a short storage time.

Planning features of case 4:

The land area is 24.4 acres, with a designed annual output of 100,000 tons; it mainly produces aquatic feed; the raw materials are mainly local, with a large number of varieties, bulk raw materials are stored in bulk warehouses and simple bulk warehouses, and small raw materials are stored in bags.

How to design a weighbridge for a complete feed mill plant?

  • 1. Specifications and models of weighbridges:

The length of trucks in feed factories is generally about 16 m, and the load capacity is considered to be about 80 t. Therefore, it is recommended to use weighbridge equipment with a weighing capacity of 80~100 t and a table size of 18.0 m×3.4 m.

  • 2. Weighbridge foundation form:
  • If the complete feed mill plant is not located in a low-lying area and the surrounding drainage is unobstructed, the weighbridge foundation is recommended to be designed as a “shallow foundation pit” form, and the elevation of the weighbridge table is slightly higher than the elevation of the surrounding roads by 30~50 mm to prevent ground rainwater from flowing into the weighbridge foundation pit.
  • If the factory is located in a low-lying area and the surrounding drainage is not smooth, the weighbridge foundation is recommended to be designed as a “no foundation pit” form. The no foundation pit form should be designed with a slope at both ends of the weighbridge.
  • 3. Weighbridge layout location:

Usually, the weighbridge is arranged at the gate of the feed factory to facilitate the trucks entering and leaving the factory to be measured by the weighbridge. When arranging the weighbridge, it should be convenient for trucks to get on and off the weighbridge and ensure the turning radius of the trucks. (Find RICHI on youtube)
