Sawdust Pellet Factory In Latvia

Sawdust Pellet Factory In Latvia

This is a 4t/h sawdust pellet factory in Latvia project.

As one of the three Baltic countries, Latvia is one of the countries with the highest forest coverage in the EU, with forest area accounting for more than 52% of the total land area. The wood processing industry is one of the important pillars of Latvia’s national economy, and it is obviously export-oriented.

The country’s wood products are exported to EU countries such as Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom, covering sawn timber, panels, furniture, wooden houses, wooden packaging and other sub-sectors.

In the process of wood processing, a large amount of sawdust, shavings and other by-products are produced every year. These by-products have long been handled in a low value-added manner, such as open-air stacking, burial, and low-price sales, resulting in resource waste and environmental pressure.

At the same time, as the European “Green New Deal” promotes the development of clean energy, wood pellets have become an important part of the EU’s carbon neutrality strategy, especially in the fields of heating, electricity, industrial boilers, etc., and the market demand continues to be strong.

In this context, a Latvian timber company with raw material integration capabilities and export channels invested in the construction of a 4-ton/hour, 20,000-ton annual shavings and sawdust pellet factory in Latvia, using modern automated equipment to convert low-value waste into energy-efficient, biorenewable clean fuels, and achieve the win-win goal of export earnings and corporate green upgrades.

1. Self-sufficient raw materials, resource utilization efficiency needs to be improved

The client has been engaged in the production of panels and custom furniture for a long time, producing thousands of tons of sawdust and shavings each year. In the past, these by-products were handled in a single way, some were piled up, and some were sold cheaply to agricultural users, failing to maximize their value. Investing in a pellet production line is the best way to upgrade its own waste.

2. Exporting pellet fuels is profitable and has a short payback period

With the transformation of Europe’s energy structure, especially the popularization of wood pellet heating in Germany, Austria, Italy and other countries, the client has stable international purchase orders and logistics channels. After the project is completed, more than 90% of the pellet products are planned to be exported, with a significantly higher profit margin than traditional domestic businesses.

3. Respond to the EU green energy policy and obtain sustainable subsidies

The client hopes to obtain EU Renewable Energy Development Fund, Latvia’s national green loan program and export tax rebate support through this project, while also improving the company’s score in the ESG (environment, society and governance) evaluation system and enhancing the brand’s international competitiveness.

4. Achieve a closed-loop industrial chain and create a zero-waste factory

By building a sawdust pellet factory in Latvia, the client can achieve a circular industrial chain from log processing – board manufacturing – waste pelletizing – pellet fuel sales, significantly reducing the company’s operating costs, increasing the comprehensive output and added value of each unit of wood, and moving towards the goal of a “carbon neutral + zero waste” factory.

The total equipment investment of this sawdust pellet factory in Latvia project is US$290,000, with a total construction area of 3,195 m2. The construction content includes production workshops, offices, dormitories and parking lots. The wood pellet processing plant project composition and construction content are detailed in the table below.

1. Water supply

The water source of this sawdust pellet factory in Latvia project is taken from the municipal water supply network. The production of this project does not require water. The water used during the operation period is mainly domestic sewage. The actual water use of this project is as follows:

Domestic water: The actual labor quota is 8 people, none of whom eat and stay in the factory area. The annual water consumption is about 120m3. The drainage volume is calculated based on 85% of the water consumption, so the annual drainage volume is 102m3/a.

2. Drainage

The domestic sewage of this wood pellet mill plant project is pre-treated in a septic tank and used for irrigation of surrounding agriculture and forestry after meeting the dry farming standards. It is not discharged.

The main raw materials of biomass pellet fuel in this sawdust pellet factory in Latvia project are wood shavings and sawdust. They are crushed and compressed into a solid biomass fuel that can be directly burned.

(1) Crushing:

The raw materials (wood shavings with low moisture content) are transported to the crusher by conveyor belt for fine crushing.

(2) Screening and drying:

Before drying, the raw materials (sawdust) are screened with a screening machine, and the large pieces of unqualified raw materials are returned to the crushing process. The purchased raw materials (sawdust) contain a certain amount of moisture and need to be dried in the drying drum. The heat source is provided by the hot air furnace, and the heat generated by the combustion of biomass pellets enters the drying drum to dry the raw materials.

The combustion process of biomass fuel will produce furnace ash, most of which is settled in the stainless steel furnace with a three-stage sedimentation chamber, and a small amount of furnace ash enters the product with the raw materials. The drying drum is a rotating cylinder slightly inclined to the horizontal line.

The raw materials and hot air enter from the higher end. As the cylinder rotates, the raw materials are difficult to adhere to the cylinder wall, which is conducive to the contact between the wet material and the flue gas. The drying exhaust gas is discharged after being treated by the cyclone dust collector.

(3) Granulation:

The dried material enters the sawdust pellet machine through the conveyor belt for granulation. The pelletizer uses extrusion molding to make the powder raw materials into cylindrical granules. The pelletizer is a closed operation.

(4) Screening:

The formed pellet fuel is screened by a screening machine, and unqualified products will be recycled after secondary crushing.

(5) Packaging and warehousing:

Qualified biomass pellets are unloaded from the finished product silo for packaging.

Rich wood resources, complete processing industry chain, and sufficient raw materials

Latvia has a sound forest management system, orderly and sustainable wood harvesting, and has a long-term, stable, and low-cost supply of wood by-products, which provides a natural raw material guarantee for the pellet production line. The processing industry chain is concentrated, the raw materials are easy to integrate, and the transportation radius is short, which is conducive to the formation of regional production clusters.

The demand for pellet fuel in Europe continues to rise, and the export advantage is significant

As a member of the European Union, Latvia has a tariff-free export channel and has geographical and institutional advantages for exporting to major pellet fuel consuming countries such as Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Italy. According to data from the European Wood Pellets Association (Bioenergy Europe), the EU pellet consumption will exceed 30 million tons in 2024, with an annual growth rate of more than 7%, and the market space is huge.

Policy support and improvement of carbon market mechanism

Latvia actively responds to the EU Climate Law, aiming to achieve more than 40% of renewable energy by 2030. As a carbon-neutral fuel, wood pellets can obtain renewable energy certification (such as ENplus, FSC), participate in the carbon trading market, realize environmental benefits, and bring additional sources of income to enterprises.

Contribute to rural economic revitalization and green industry upgrading

The sawdust pellet factory in Latvia project drives the reuse, transportation, warehousing, packaging, and export of wood processing residues, which can promote local employment, increase rural additional industry income, and promote the transformation of the country’s role from a “wood exporting country” to a “green energy exporting country”.

The integration with clean heating and power systems has broad prospects

Latvia is promoting the green upgrade of regional centralized heating systems. A large number of traditional heating stations urgently need to be transformed into biomass fuel systems. Wood pellets have significant development potential in the domestic energy substitution market due to their standardization, easy automatic feeding, and convenient storage and transportation.
