Biomass Pellet Production Line In U.K.

The client of this project is an agricultural technology company. Based on the processing prospects of biomass pellets, it invested in the construction of a biomass pellet production line project.

The project uses straw and sawdust as the main raw materials, with a moisture content of about 40%. According to customer needs, we have configured drying equipment for it. The labor quota of this project is 6 people, none of whom are accommodated in the factory area. This project adopts an eight-hour work system in one shift, with an annual working time of 300 days.

This is a multi-purpose production line project. The 8t/h biomass pellet production line in U.K. project not only processes biomass fuel pellets, but also processes straw feed pellets and sawdust cat litter pellets. These two products are also very promising products at present. In addition, the project will directly sell some sawdust for animal bedding. In this project, after screening and removing impurities, some sawdust will be sold directly to horse farms, pet companies, etc.

The main production processes used in this 8t/h biomass pellet production line in U.K. project are as follows:

1. Screening

Screen the purchased raw materials (sawdust, straw) to remove impurities (large particles of sand and gravel).

2. Crushing and pulverizing

Purchase raw materials (the raw materials used in this project are dry raw materials, and the moisture content of raw materials is ≤10%), and manually put the raw materials into the crusher for crushing. The materials after preliminary crushing are then sent to the crusher for crushing through a bucket car. Some of the raw materials contain iron nails, which need to be removed. The project crusher and crusher are equipped with iron removal devices (magnets).

3. Drying

The moisture content of raw and auxiliary materials entering the site is about 40%. Drying can remove some moisture, but the process requires the moisture content to be below 20%, so the raw materials need to be dried. The dryer used in this project is an electric dryer, which can effectively reduce the moisture content of raw and auxiliary materials to below 20%.

4. Granulation

This biomass pellet production line in UK project will convey the crushed powder to the biomass pellet press through a belt conveyor, and press it into granules under high temperature and high pressure. The pelletizer of this 8t/h biomass pellet production line in U.K. project uses electricity as energy to provide power. Hot pressing molding process is one of the most widely used biomass compression molding processes.

For different types of raw materials, particle sizes, moisture content and biomass pellet mill equipment, the molding process parameters must also change accordingly. However, since lignin begins to soften and become sticky at 70~100℃, it becomes molten when the temperature reaches 200~300℃, and has high viscosity. It can act as a binder during the hot pressing process. Therefore, the heating and maintenance molding temperature is generally 150~300℃, so that lignin, cellulose, etc. are softened and squeezed into biomass molding blocks.

5. Natural cooling

The molded product is transported to the stacking table by a bucket elevator, and is lifted by the bucket elevator and naturally cooled in the bucket elevator funnel. When the temperature drops to room temperature, the product is packaged and stored for sale.

The outlook for biomass pellet processing in the UK is generally positive, but some key factors need to be noted. ‌

  • First, as a renewable energy source, the market demand for biomass pellets continues to grow. With the strengthening of global environmental protection policies and the promotion of clean energy, the demand for biomass pellets as an environmentally friendly product to replace traditional fossil energy will continue to grow. Especially in rural areas, the application of biomass pellets will be more extensive, providing a huge market space for small processing plants. ‌
  • Second, the British government has provided policy support for the development of biomass energy. Since the Electricity Act of 1989, the UK has formulated a series of policies to incentivize the development of renewable energy, including the Non-Fossil Fuel Obligation Convention and the Renewable Energy Obligation Certificate System. These policy frameworks provide a favorable environment for biomass pellet processing. ‌
  • In terms of market trends and policy environment, the demand for biomass energy in the UK is expected to continue to grow. In 2024, the UK’s wood pellet imports are expected to reach 9.641 million metric tons, mainly used in the field of industrial energy production. The United States is the largest supplier of wood pellets in the UK, accounting for 73% of the market share. It is based on the domestic market demand in the UK that customers invest in the biomass pellet processing industry, because in the UK, if it is properly managed, it is obviously a profitable industry.
  • In terms of technical requirements and production costs, the production technology of biomass pellets is relatively mature, and biomass pellet processing plants can quickly master relevant technologies through learning and training to achieve rapid production. In addition, waste materials in the biomass pellet processing process can be recycled, which not only reduces production costs, but also conforms to the concept of sustainable development.
