This 2t/h biomass pelletizing plant in India project adopts a ring die pellet machine with roller die extrusion forming technology. This machine is a wet pressing (cold pressing) forming process. The ring die biomass extruder used to produce biomass pellet fuel generally does not require external heating.

It mainly relies on the friction heat generated during the extrusion of the material to soften and bond the material. The moisture content of the material is relatively wide, and it can generally be formed between 10% and 40%. For RICHI’s biomass pellet press, the optimal moisture condition for pelletizing is about 15%.

First, the agricultural and forestry product processing waste (wood scraps, wood chips, bamboo chips) is pre-treated to reach a certain moisture content, and the length or size is processed to a suitable size for entering the pellet forming machine, and then it is automatically sent to the biomass fuel pellet machine.

There is a moving mold on the rotating main shaft in the forming equipment, which is generally a roller-type material. The material is gradually extruded and heated between the fixed/moving molds of the equipment, and is extruded into a cylindrical or square column through the ring die hole, and then cut into blocks or particles of a certain length, and then packaged as finished products after cooling.

Detailed description of the biofuel pellet processing process:

  1. Impurity and iron removal: First, the agricultural and forestry product processing waste (bamboo sawdust, wood scraps) is screened and screened to remove impurities and iron, and remove impurities mixed in the raw materials.
  2. Raw material crushing: The bamboo, sawdust, and wood scraps after impurities removal are crushed into powders of more than 18 mesh, and then the materials are transported to the drying process.
  3. Drying: Bamboo sawdust and wood scraps generally have a high moisture content. In order to ensure the optimal moisture conditions required for molding, the mixed materials need to be dried until the moisture content of the materials reaches about 20%. The hot flue gas generated by the combustion of biomass pellet fuel in the combustion furnace is used to dry the materials.
  4. Biomass pelleting: The dried mixture is extruded into a ring die biomass pellet mill.
  5. Cooling and shaping: The final product is cooled to below 350C by a cooling device.
  6. Inspection and warehousing: The cooled products are packaged and warehousing, and unqualified products are returned to the crushing process and used as raw materials after crushing.

The 2t/h biomass pellet plant in India project covers an area of 4000m2, of which the built plant area is 2500m2. According to the general plan provided by the owner, two production plants have been built on the north side of the project, the raw material warehouse and office are arranged on the northeast side, the crusher, drying kiln and biomass pellet making machine are installed in the south side plant; the finished product warehouse is arranged on the southeast side.

The construction content of the plant area is relatively simple, arranged according to the production process flow, and the logistics are smooth, so the general plan layout of the plant area is very reasonable.

The 2t/h biomass pellet plant in India project uses bamboo chips, sawdust, straw and other raw materials from agricultural and forestry product processing waste to produce biomass pellet fuel. As an alternative clean fuel, biomass pellet fuel can effectively improve the combustion performance of agricultural and forestry waste. Its sulfur, nitrogen and ash content are low.

It can be used on the matching special combustion equipment to achieve clean and efficient combustion, and produce less sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and smoke, which is a low-pollution fuel.

The promotion and use of biomass pellet fuel can change the air pollution caused by burning straw and coal in boilers in rural areas, and increase the supply of clean energy. Therefore, biomass pellet fuel is the most economical and environmentally friendly fuel to replace fossil fuels, which will bring good environmental benefits.

The prospects for building biomass pellet plant in India are very broad, but there are also some challenges.

Prospect analysis

  • Policy support‌: The Indian government has introduced a series of policies requiring coal-fired power plants to use a certain proportion of biomass fuel. For example, the co-firing directive issued in 2021 requires thermal power plants to use 5% biomass fuel and increase it to 7% in the 2025-26 fiscal year. These policies provide clear market demand for biomass pellet plants‌.
  • Market demand‌: India burns about 670 million tons of coal for power generation each year, and it is expected to increase to 50% by 2040. With the growth of India’s economy and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the market demand for biomass pellets will increase further. India currently needs about 96,000 tons of biomass pellets per day, but the current production capacity is only 7,000 tons per day.
  • Environmental protection needs: India faces serious air pollution problems, and the use of biomass pellets can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality. The Indian government aims to reduce 38 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions through biomass co-firing.

Challenges faced

  • Raw material collection and logistics: The main raw materials for biomass pellets are agricultural residues and wood waste. However, the collection and logistics of these raw materials are a huge challenge. Farmers burn the straw quickly after harvesting, resulting in limited collection time and increasing the difficulty of collection and processing.
  • Technical challenges: Pellets made from agricultural residues tend to contain high ash and other elements, which can cause corrosion, fouling and slagging in boilers. Therefore, advanced processing technology is required to ensure the normal operation of the boiler.
  • Market acceptance: Although policies require power plants to use biomass fuels, many power plants lack experience and technology in using biomass pellets, which may lead to low market acceptance.

In general, building biomass pellet plant in India has huge market potential, but challenges in raw material collection, technical processing and market acceptance need to be overcome. Through technological innovation, policy support and market promotion, biomass pellet plants are expected to succeed in India.
