Complete Biomass Pellet Plant in Romania

Complete Biomass Pellet Plant in Romania

RICHI Machinery is a professional manufacturer of feed equipment, pellet production systems, biomass pellet lines, organic fertilizer plants and cat litter production solutions. Over the past decade, we have supplied complete biomass pellet plants to clients across Asia, Europe and South America.

This case introduces a complete biomass pellet plant in Romania with a designed annual output of 20,000 tons, corresponding to a working capacity of 2.5–3 tons per hour and 7,200 operating hours per year.

The project is located in an agricultural industrial zone in eastern Romania, where crop straw and wood processing residues are abundant. The client invested approximately USD 178,000 in total project development, including equipment, environmental systems and installation. The biomass pellet production line equipment supplied by RICHI accounted for approximately USD 142,000, representing the core of the investment.

This complete biomass pellet plant in Romania was commissioned in January 2018 and operates under a three-shift system with 12 employees. The plant produces cylindrical biomass densified fuel pellets with a diameter of 8–10 mm and length of 20–40 mm, primarily used for rural heating systems and small industrial boilers.

Romania is one of the largest agricultural producers in Eastern Europe. Each year, large quantities of wheat straw, corn stalks and forestry residues are generated. Historically, part of this biomass was openly burned in fields, creating air pollution issues.

The investor behind this complete biomass pellet plant in Romania is a local agricultural resource recycling company seeking to:

  • Reduce open-field straw burning
  • Convert agricultural waste into high-value renewable fuel
  • Supply pellets to district heating cooperatives
  • Serve domestic pellet stove distributors

Romania’s cold winters and increasing gas prices have strengthened the market for solid biomass fuels. Small and medium-scale pellet plants between 15,000–30,000 tons per year are economically viable and suitable for regional markets.

This biomass pellet project is a new build facility constructed within the client’s own 3,000 m² industrial site, with a 2,000 m² production workshop.

The plant operates one main production workshop forming a complete biomass pellet plant in Romania.

Romania’s agricultural structure makes straw and wood residues readily available. The client sources raw materials within a 50 km radius, reducing transportation costs.

The raw material structure is as follows:

Raw MaterialAnnual Consumption (t/a)SourceTransportation
Straw11,000Local farmsTruck
Wood sawdust7,000Rural sawmills, furniture factoriesTruck
Waste wood pieces3,000Furniture workshopsTruck

The moisture content of raw materials averages 10–15%, suitable for pelletization with minimal drying.

The mixture ratio ensures balanced lignin content for pellet bonding and calorific value stability.

UtilityAnnual Consumption
Water360 tons/year
Electricity700,000 kWh/year

There is no process wastewater. Domestic wastewater is treated through septic systems and discharged according to Romanian rural environmental standards.

The complete biomass pellet plant in Romania includes the following core equipment:

No.Equipment NameQuantity
1Hammer Crusher1
2Biomass Pellet Mill2
3Conveyor2
4Primary Screening Machine1
5Bucket Elevator1
6Feeder1
7Cooler1

Additionally:

  • Cyclone dust collectors (3 sets)
  • Bag filters (3 sets)
  • Main fan with total air volume: 20,000 m³/h
  • 15 m exhaust stack

Two biomass pellet press machines operate continuously; one remains standby for maintenance rotation.

The biomass pellet production line follows a mechanical densification process optimized for straw and mixed wood residues.

1. Crushing Stage

Straw, wood pieces and sawdust enter the hammer crusher.
Output particle size: approximately 10 mm.
Generated emissions: dust (G1), noise (N), impurities (S).

2. Feeding Stage

Crushed material is conveyed to the feeder system.
Dust emissions may occur during feeding (G2).

3. Screening Stage

Material passes through a primary screen to remove oversized particles.
Unqualified material returns to crusher.
Emissions: dust (G3), noise (N).

4. Pelletizing Stage

Material enters ring die pellet machines.
Operating temperature: 90–100°C.
Initial moisture: 10%.
Evaporation during pelletizing: 5%.
Final moisture in pellets: 5%.

Emissions: dust, steam (G4), noise (N).

5. Cooling Stage

Hot pellets are cooled via air flow in a cooler.
Dust may be generated (G5).

6. Packaging

Cooled pellets are bagged and transferred to storage warehouse.

Sea freight delivery time: approximately 38 days.

Romania’s biomass potential exceeds 7 million tons annually. Rural heating demand remains strong, especially where natural gas infrastructure is limited.

Key drivers:

  • EU renewable energy policies
  • Reduction of agricultural burning
  • Rising fossil fuel costs
  • Growth of pellet stove market

A 2.5–3 T/H complete biomass pellet plant in Romania aligns well with regional demand and feedstock availability.
