Bamboo Pellet Plant In Colombia

Bamboo Pellet Plant In Colombia

This is a 1t/h bamboo pellet plant in Colombia project.

Located in the northwest of South America, Colombia is located in the tropics and has rich natural resources and vast forest coverage. Among them, bamboo resources are extremely abundant, especially the “Guadua angustifolia” of the subfamily Bambusoideae, which is known as the “Green Steel of South America”.

As a fast-growing and renewable plant resource, bamboo is not only widely used in industries such as construction, furniture, handicrafts and papermaking, but also produces a large amount of scraps during processing, such as bamboo chips, bamboo powder, bamboo joints, bamboo heads, bamboo tails, etc.

With the strengthening of environmental protection policies and the rise of clean energy, Colombia is actively seeking ways to make high-value use of bamboo by-products.

Against this background, a bamboo product manufacturing company located in Cauca Province invested in the construction of a bamboo pellet plant in Colombia with a capacity of 1 ton/hour and an annual output of 8,000 tons. It aims to convert bamboo waste into biomass pellet fuel through compression molding technology, which can be used in industrial heating, residential heating, agricultural product drying and other fields, and promote the optimization of local green energy structure.

Brief description of the process flow adopted in this bamboo pellet plant in Colombia project:

The main difference between machine-made charcoal and bamboo charcoal granules lies in the different raw materials.

The raw materials of machine-made charcoal are bamboo powder, bamboo slag and other small-diameter scraps; the raw materials of bamboo charcoal granules are bamboo joints, bamboo heads, bamboo tails and other raw materials with larger particle sizes (the bamboo charcoal granule process does not have the first and second crushing and rod making processes in the front stage, and is directly dried, carbonized, crushed and packaged).

(1) Raw material crushing:

The raw bamboo powder, bamboo chips and scraps are crushed by a blade crusher. Due to the crushing by crusher, bamboo powder, bamboo chips and scraps are refined into fibrous chips with a length of 20mm.

(2) Chip drying:

The moisture content of the raw materials entering the factory is about 40%, and the process requires a moisture content of about 10%, so the raw materials need to be dried. This project uses an airflow dryer, which is mainly composed of a combustion furnace, a feeder, a drying tube, a cyclone separator and an induced draft fan.

The flue gas generated by the drying furnace enters the drying tube together with the crushed raw materials. The water in the raw materials is evaporated during the high-speed hot air flow. The upper part of the drying tube is connected to a two-stage dehumidification cyclone separator.

In the cyclone separator, the raw materials are separated from the combustion flue gas and water vapor. The separated dry powder enters the dry powder silo, and the waste gas enters the subsequent water curtain dust collector for treatment and is discharged after meeting the standards. The lower part of the bamboo dryer is connected to the second crusher, and the dried raw materials are transported to the second crusher through the lower part.

(3) Second crushing:

The dried raw materials are crushed for the second time by a blade crusher, so that bamboo powder, bamboo chips and scraps are refined into fibrous chips with a length of 0.8mm. The second crushing equipment is equipped with a secondary dust removal cyclone separator. The dried powder enters the dry powder silo for storage. The exhaust gas after dust removal enters the water curtain dust collector for treatment and then is discharged.

(4) Granulation:

The dried chips and powder materials are sent to the dry powder silo through a screw conveyor. The materials are sent to the U-shaped feeding screw conveyor at the bottom of the granulator through the silo, and the materials are evenly sent to the bamboo pellet machine.

Due to the use of a ring-type bamboo granulator suitable for high-fiber material rod making, the surface of the produced granules is smooth and the hardness is moderate.

The aperture is 6~12mm. Strong friction between the material and the pressure roller and template in the granulator cavity generates a large amount of heat, which raises the material temperature to about 180℃, softens the fiber, and forms a rod.

(5) Carbonization:

The formed bamboo pellet are transported out of the rod making room by a belt conveyor and then manually loaded into the kiln car according to the standard loading method. The loaded kiln car is pushed into the carbonization kiln for carbonization. The carbonization kiln has an air inlet at the bottom and an exhaust and smoke outlet at the top to extract moisture.

After about 8 to 12 hours of combustion and charcoal, the carbonization of the product is completed after cooling. Carbonization is the process of dry distilling the formed pellets into bamboo charcoal under oxygen-deficient conditions. Its working principle is that the formed rods burn and decompose into tar, bamboo vinegar, coal gas and water vapor under oxygen-deficient conditions.

The maximum temperature of the carbonization kiln reaches 500℃, and the cracking temperature of tar is about 1000℃-1200℃, so the tar will not be further cracked after decomposition.

(6) Inspection, weighing, packaging and warehousing.

1. Water supply and drainage

① Water supply

This bamboo pellet plant in Colombia project uses its own wells to supply water for production and living, as well as firefighting. The water used in this project mainly includes office and living water, dust removal water, firefighting water, and greening water.

In the production process of this bamboo biomass pelletizing plant project, a small amount of water will be sprayed after the carbon rods are carbonized and discharged from the kiln to accelerate cooling. According to the output, the cooling water consumption is estimated to be 1.6m³/d, 480m³/a; the water used for water curtain dust removal is recycled water, and the dust removal wastewater is designed to be recycled after sedimentation, with a recycling rate of 95%.

The water damaged by flue gas evaporation and sediment removal needs to be supplemented every day, and fresh water is supplemented by about 10m3/d; the annual water consumption is 3000t/a. The upper clear liquid is recycled, and the sediment is dried by the filter press and used as agricultural fertilizer, and no production wastewater is discharged.

The number of employees in this project is 26, and there is no canteen or accommodation in the factory area. The office life water consumption is calculated as 45L/person•d, then the life water consumption is: 1.2m3/d, 360m3/a (calculated as 300 days).

② Drainage

The sewage in the factory area mainly produces the domestic sewage of employees.

The drainage of this bamboo pellet plant in Colombia project adopts the separation system of clean and dirty water, and rainwater is directly discharged to the west canal through the rainwater ditch.

The amount of domestic sewage of employees is calculated as 80% of the water consumption, then the amount of domestic sewage is 0.96m3/d, 288m3/a. The bamboo biomass pellet mill project is equipped with a three-level septic tank for collection and treatment, and it is regularly cleaned for greening of the factory area or fertilizing surrounding seedlings.

2. Heating

The fuel required for drying the raw materials of this project is bamboo joints, bamboo tubes and other scraps and combustible gas generated by the carbonization furnace. The annual consumption of bamboo joints and bamboo tubes in the project is about 125t. The main components of bamboo joints and bamboo tubes are ash content of 1.99%, sulfur content of 0.02%, and low calorific value of 3330kcal/kg.

3. Power supply

The estimated annual power consumption of this biomass pellet manufacturing plant project is 100,000 kW·h, which will be supplied by the municipal power grid.

4. Work system

The factory of this project has 2 shifts per day, each shift works 8 hours, and works 300 days a year.

5. Firefighting

The water consumption of fire hydrants in this project is calculated according to the water consumption of fire hydrants in buildings with the highest fire hazard level. The water consumption of indoor fire hydrants in enterprises is 20L/s, and the water consumption of outdoor fire fighting is 25L/s. The fire duration is 2h.

The outdoor area uses a combined domestic water and fire water pipeline system. A fire pipe network is set up on both sides of the passage between the raw material workshop and the carbonization kiln plant. It is required to be set up as a ring fire pipe network. The number of fire hydrants should be calculated and determined according to regulations.

The fire hydrant system uses a temporary high-pressure fire hydrant fire extinguishing water supply system. Portable fire extinguishers are installed indoors and in the plant. The factory roads and passages are also fire passages.

The layout of the bamboo pellet plant in Colombia project is arranged in accordance with the principle of “convenience, safety, smooth flow and matching”, striving to have clear divisions, reasonable layout, convenient use, convenient logistics and matching functions. The site of the project has a drop in terrain, and the construction content includes production workshops, raw material yards, carbonization kilns, finished product packaging and warehouses, office and living supporting rooms, etc.

The factory area of this project has a gate that is directly connected to the outside road; the raw material yard is arranged on the east side of the project, the production workshop is arranged in the middle, the carbonization kiln is arranged on the west side, and the finished product packaging room and warehouse are arranged at the gate. Each functional area is set up separately, the functional area division of labor is clear, and the layout of the factory is simple and reasonable.

The factory area fully considers the requirements of transportation, safety, fire protection, etc. The layout of each functional area is compact and reasonable, which meets the needs of production technology and is convenient for management. In summary, the overall layout of the project is reasonable.

1. The company itself generates a large amount of bamboo waste and urgently needs a resource treatment solution

The customer mainly sells bamboo furniture, bamboo crafts, bamboo floors and other products. During the production process, a large amount of bamboo chips, bamboo powder, scraps and discarded bamboo segments are generated every day. Long-term stacking not only occupies the site, but also faces safety and environmental risks. Granular utilization provides a new way for waste treatment that is environmentally friendly, efficient and economical.

2. The market demand for biomass pellet fuel as a clean energy is rising

As Colombia promotes renewable energy policies, a large number of industrial users (such as food, pharmaceuticals, bricks and tiles, etc.) are gradually phasing out traditional coal-fired boilers and turning to low-carbon fuels. Bamboo pellet fuel has become a new favorite in the market due to its high combustion value, low carbon emissions and low ash content. Customers have taken a fancy to this trend and have laid out the fuel market in advance.

3. Pellet products can be used for self-use + external sales to build an energy closed loop

Part of the pellet fuel of the bamboo pellet plant in Colombia project is used in the company’s own heat treatment system to reduce operating energy consumption; the other part is sold to industrial customers and rural markets to expand revenue channels and form a closed-loop business model of “bamboo processing-waste recycling-energy supply”.

4. The project can obtain policy subsidies and environmental protection financing support

The bamboo fuel pellet plant project is in line with the national green development policy of Colombia. The customer plans to apply for support from the National Clean Energy Fund and establish cooperation with international green investment and financing platforms (such as CAF and IDB) to reduce construction costs and improve the feasibility of project financing.

5. Enhance brand influence and corporate sustainable development capabilities

As a well-known bamboo product manufacturer in the region, the customer hopes to enhance the company’s image in the fields of environmental protection, energy conservation, and sustainable development by developing renewable energy business, enhance its competitiveness in the global market, and attract more green procurement orders.
