Straw Animal Manure Organic Fertilizer Pellet Line in Ukraine

Straw Animal Manure Organic Fertilizer Pellet Line in Ukraine

The straw animal manure organic fertilizer pellet line in Ukraine is a strategically designed facility aimed at converting locally abundant agricultural residues and livestock manure into high-quality organic fertilizer.

The line is designed to operate with a capacity of 1-2 tons per hour, resulting in an annual production of approximately 4,320 tons, based on a single-shift 8-hour operation over 300 days per year. The project integrates modern pelletizing technology with sustainable agricultural practices, offering both environmental and economic benefits.

This facility addresses two major challenges: the disposal of large amounts of straw from cereal and corn production, and the management of animal manure from dairy and poultry farms. By transforming these by-products into organic fertilizer, the project contributes to soil health, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and provides a reliable supply of organic fertilizer for local agricultural operations.

The facility is situated on 15 acres of leased farmland in central Ukraine, within easy reach of major straw and manure sources. The site features existing storage sheds adapted for raw material stockpiling and a dedicated production hall for pelletizing operations. Approximately 1,200 m² is allocated for production, while 500 m² is designated for raw material storage, and 300 m² for green space and minor administrative facilities.

The total project investment is estimated at USD 250,000. Equipment procurement and installation account for roughly USD 80,000, while civil works, utilities, and contingency costs make up the remainder.

Ukraine is one of the largest grain-producing countries in Europe, with millions of tons of straw generated annually. Additionally, livestock farming produces substantial volumes of manure, which, if left unmanaged, contribute to environmental pollution. Open-field burning of straw is a common practice that results in air pollution, while unprocessed manure emits methane and can contaminate surface and groundwater.

The client for this project is an agro-processing cooperative in central Ukraine, consisting of local farmers and small-scale livestock producers. The cooperative sought to invest in a straw animal manure organic fertilizer pellet line in Ukraine to:

  • Utilize locally available agricultural by-products efficiently.
  • Reduce environmental impact caused by straw burning and unmanaged manure.
  • Supply high-quality organic fertilizer to local farms, supporting sustainable agriculture.
  • Comply with evolving environmental regulations regarding waste management and emissions.

The project was initiated in response to a combination of factors: increasing demand for organic fertilizers in Ukraine, pressure to reduce agricultural emissions, and the availability of cost-effective feedstock. The production line focuses on creating 6–8 mm diameter organic fertilizer pellets, suitable for grain crops, vegetables, and horticultural applications.

Ukraine’s central and western regions are abundant in straw and livestock manure. Wheat, barley, and corn straw are widely available during harvest seasons, while dairy and poultry farms generate consistent manure supply. The project emphasizes a feedstock mix of approximately 70% straw and 30% animal manure, with minor adjustments depending on moisture and nutrient content.

Raw materials are collected, preprocessed, and stored in dedicated facilities before entering the production line. This ensures consistent quality and uninterrupted operations throughout the year.

Raw Material Supply Table:

Poultry Manure50025–30%Layer farms near production site, blended to reduce moisture content

Preprocessing includes chopping straw to 2–5 cm lengths using a straw shredder, screening manure to remove debris, and mixing materials according to the designed ratio. Moisture is adjusted as necessary to achieve optimal conditions for composting and pelletizing.

The project employs a semi-automatic continuous process, integrating preprocessing, composting, pelletizing, cooling, screening, and packaging. This design ensures consistent pellet quality, high energy efficiency, and reduced operational risk. The key steps are:

  1. Raw Material Collection and Storage: Straw and manure are transported to the facility and stored in separate silos or open-air sheds with covered tops. Moisture levels are regularly monitored.
  2. Preprocessing: Straw is chopped to 2–5 cm lengths using a straw shredder, while manure is screened to remove large debris. Both materials are mixed according to predetermined ratios.
  3. Composting Stage: The mixed feedstock undergoes windrow or agitated composting for 7–10 days to stabilize nutrients and reduce pathogens. Moisture is adjusted to around 20–25% for optimal pelletizing.
  4. Pelletizing: The organic fertilizer pellet making machine is used to compress the material into 6–8 mm diameter pellets. Steam injection is applied for uniform pellet quality.
  5. Cooling: Pellets are cooled in a counter-flow cooler to ambient temperature, reducing moisture to under 12%.
  6. Screening: Oversized or broken pellets are crushed and returned to the mill.
  7. Packaging and Storage: Finished pellets are stored in bulk silos or packed in 50 kg bags for distribution.

Each piece of equipment is designed for continuous operation, energy efficiency, and ease of maintenance, ensuring high-quality pellet production.

The operation is designed for efficiency, consuming minimal water and electricity:

  • Electricity: 65 kWh per ton of pellets.
  • Water: 2 m³ per day, mainly for moisture adjustment during composting.
  • Labor: 8 operators per shift (1 shift/day).
  • Operating Days: 300 days/year.

Ukraine’s agricultural regions are increasingly regulated for environmental impact. The project includes:

  • Dust collection: Cyclone and bag filter systems at key processing points.
  • Odor control: Biofiltration during composting and pelletizing.
  • Wastewater management: Moisture runoff from composting is collected in lined ponds and recycled.

The straw animal manure organic fertilizer pellet line in Ukraine offers several advantages:

  • Sustainable Resource Use: Converts agricultural residues and manure into valuable fertilizer.
  • Environmental Benefits: Reduces open-field burning, methane emissions, and nutrient runoff.
  • Economic Returns: Generates high-value organic fertilizer for local agricultural markets.
  • Stable Production: Advanced machinery ensures consistent pellet quality and minimal downtime.
  • Pellet Diameter: 6–8 mm
  • Length: 10–20 mm
  • Moisture Content: ≤12%
  • Nutrient Content: NPK 2–1–2 (adjusted depending on feedstock composition)
  • Packaging: Bulk storage or 50 kg bags for local distribution

These specifications meet local farmers’ needs for organic fertilization of grain, vegetable, and horticultural crops.

The demand for organic fertilizers in Ukraine is growing due to:

  • Increasing awareness of soil health and sustainable farming practices.

Daily operations include monitoring equipment, adjusting feedstock ratios, conducting quality checks, and handling packaging and storage. RICHI Machinery provides training and operational manuals to ensure that local staff can run the facility efficiently and safely.

Raw materials are sourced within a 50 km radius, minimizing transportation costs. Straw is stored in ventilated sheds, while manure is pre-composted on-site. Finished pellets are stored in bulk silos or bagged for delivery to local distributors. Seasonal feedstock variations are managed through strategic storage and inventory planning, ensuring year-round production.

Potential risks include moisture variation, equipment breakdowns, and seasonal feedstock shortages. These are mitigated through:

  • Moisture monitoring and adjustment systems.
  • Preventive maintenance programs.
  • Diversified sourcing from multiple farms.
  • Training for operational staff to handle emergencies.

With an investment of USD 250,000 and annual production of 4,320 tons, the line can generate revenues of approximately USD 1.0 million per year, depending on local fertilizer prices. Operational costs, including labor, electricity, water, and maintenance, are estimated at USD 400,000 annually, providing a payback period of 3–4 years.
